Signing Up & Managing Your Account
How do I sign up?
Pre-registration for Summer Break begins on May 20, 2019. You can create your account early, then start logging your reading and activities beginning on June 1, 2019.
Even if you participated in Summer Break last year, you will still need to create a new account.
On the Summer Break website, click on either "Sign Up" or "Get Started” then enter some basic information about yourself.
You can create either an individual account, a family account, or a group account
You can only sign up once, but we encourage you to read and log activities all summer long.
What is an individual account?
An individual account means that you will record reading time/activities for yourself.
What is a family account?
A family account allows people within the same household to participate on one Summer Break account together.
When you create an account for the Summer Break website, you have the option to add family members to that account. Once you do, you’ll be able to log reading time or activities for all of your family members or any combination of members. If you created the account, you are the family leader. If you did not create the account, you are a family member. Only family leaders are able to log in and track activities and reading but can share their login information with family members if they want to. You can create an account with up to 5 people on your own. If your family has more than 5 members, please create your account and add 4 family members, then contact library staff for assistance.
Visiting family members are encouraged to participate in Summer Break and can create their own individual or family account. Visiting family members are eligible for any of the milestone incentives but will not be eligible for the Carowinds ticket if they do not have a valid Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card number of their own.
Can my group or summer camp participate in Summer Break?
Yes! Group accounts are designed for people who want to participate together but are not part of the same household. Summer camps, daycares, senior centers, and other groups can sign up with staff assistance and then log their reading and activities together. Please contact your local library, or firstname.lastname@example.org, for more information. Group participants are not eligible for the Carowinds ticket incentive.
Why is an email address required?
Is a library card number required?
A library card number is not required to complete the Summer Break program. However, an active library card or ONE Access ID number in the "library card number field" is one of the required elements for becoming eligible for a Carowinds ticket. Learn more about the incentives you can earn here.
What if I lose my password?
Click the "Forgot password?" link on the Summer Break website above the “Login” button. This link will send an email to the address on your account that will help you reset your password.
How do I change my information?
Click on "My account" in the upper right-hand corner of your Dashboard screen. Under the “Edit” tab, you can edit your email address, password and family name. You can also edit any individual’s name, avatar, library card number, school, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools or ONE Access student ID number, grade and home library location.

How do I log reading time and activities?
Once you are signed up and logged in, click the "Log an activity" button on your dashboard. Choose who participated in the activity, then select the category and activity.
What counts as reading?
You may read anything you like. We just want you to read! You can read to yourself, to someone else or have someone read to you. You can read books, magazines, newspapers, websites, email, comics, blogs or listen to recorded books.
How much should I read each day?
We all read at our own pace, so you can go as fast or as slow as you want. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day. The website will allow you to log up to 16 hours of reading per day, but we want you to do something else with the other 8 hours, like sleep.
How do I finish the program?
Complete Summer Break by:
- Logging 20 hours of reading time
- Logging 10 hours of reading time AND completing 10 learning activities
Ex: 10 hours + 10 activities, 11 hours + 9 activities, etc.
Please note that you must read at least 10 hours of reading (regardless of the number of activities) to finish the program. 9 hours of reading and 20 activities does not count as finishing the program.
