How do I sign up?

Pre-registration for Summer Break begins on May 22, 2017. You can create your account early, then start logging your reading and activities beginning on June 1, 2017.

  • If you participated in Summer Break last year:
    • On the Summer Break website, enter the same email address and password you used to log in last year, then click the “Login” button. When you are logged in, a message will pop up asking if you would like to participate in Summer Break again this year; once you have confirmed, you’re all set! If you don’t remember your password from last year, click the “Forgot password?” link.

  • If this is your first year participating in Summer Break:
    • On the Summer Break website, click on either "Sign Up" or "Get Started” then enter some basic information about yourself.
Why is an email address required?

Each account in the Summer Break website must have a unique email address so that you can reset your account password, receive email reminders and be notified if you win a weekly prize. Library staff can help you set up an email address if you don’t already have one. The Library will not sell or share your email address, and uses email addresses and other personal information in accordance with the Library's Privacy Policy.

What is a family account?

When you create an account for the Summer Break website, you have the option to add family members to that account. Once you do, you’ll be able to log reading time or activities for all of your family members or any combination of members. If you created the account, you are the family leader. If you did not create the account, you are a family member. Only family leaders are able to log in and track activities and reading, but can share their login information with family members if they want to. Up to 5 people can be on a family account. If your family has more than 5 members, please create your account and add 4 family members, then contact library staff for assistance.

Can my group or summer camp participate in Summer Break?

Yes, we have a group option for 2017. Groups of 15 or more can sign up (with staff assistance) and then log their reading and activities together. Group members will receive their own username and password so that they can log reading time and activities individually if they choose.

What if I lose my password?

Click the "Forgot password?" link on the Summer Break website above the “Login” button. This link will send an email to the address on your account that will help you reset your password.

How do I change my information?

Click on "My account" in the upper right-hand corner of your Dashboard screen. Under the “Edit” tab, you can edit your email address, password and family name. You can also edit any individual’s name, avatar, library card number, school, Charlotte Mecklenburg School student ID number, grade and home library location.

How do I log reading time and activities?

Once you are signed up and logged in, click the "Log an activity" button on your dashboard. Choose who participated in the activity, then select the category and activity.

What counts as reading?

You may read anything you like. We just want you to read! You can read to yourself, to someone else or have someone read to you. You can read books, magazines, newspapers, websites, email, comics or listen to recorded books.

How much should I read each day?

We all read at our own pace, so you can go as fast or as slow as you want. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day. The website will allow you to log up to 16 hours of reading per day, but we want you to do something else with the other 8 hours, like sleep.

How do I finish the program?

There are two ways to complete the Summer Break program:

  1. Read and log 20 hours
    OR
  2. Read and log at least 10 hours + complete enough activities for a total of 20
    Ex: 10 hours + 10 activities, 11 hours + 9 activities, etc.
Please note that you must read at least 10 hours of reading (regardless of the number of activities) to finish the program. Nine hours of reading and 20 activities does not count as finishing the program.
